Post-Modernism

This week's ALVC tutorial covers Post-Modernism. Use the ALVC texts and definitions from the internet to define the term and answer the following questions;
1. Define Post-Modernism using 8-10 bullet points that include short quotes.

l   The word postmodernism is defined in many different ways, the term can be used in philosophy, literature, social sciences. Many people have different opinions on the meaning of postmodernism.
l   This word is compos in 2 parts. “Post” is recognized as a Latin word “after” and “modernism” refers to the modern period.
l   It was a movement in architecture and art. ( away from modernism )
l   Postmodernism don’t attempt to refine thoughts on what’s right or wrong, true or false, good or evil. What they believed is that there aren’t any absolute truths.
l   The postmodernism started in the 1975
l   “It deconstructs the ideas and values of modernism to reveal what composes them and shows that such modernist ideas as equality and liberty are not natural to humankind or true to human nature but are ideals, intellectual construction” said Witcombe,C
l    It is associated with relativism.
l    Were claims to be the successor to the 17th century enlightenment.

2. Use a quote by Witcombe (2000) to define the Post-Modern artist.
The post modern artist is “reflexive” in that he/ she is self aware and consciously involved in a process of thinking about him/ herself and society in a deconstructive manner, “demasking” pretensions , becoming aware of his/ her culture self in history, and acceleration the process of self-consciousness”

3. Use the grid on pages 42 and 43 to summarize the list of the features of Post-
Modernity.
The time has passed through these years, and the world is changing, in the cultural paradigms, the postmodernism are basically showing the difference between the postmodernism and the modernism. In the postmodernism world, people are explore more ways to create artwork, and discovered more new materials. In the modernism age, people counted the realistic painting as the best, but the distinction between postmodernism and modernism, people are now devising more ideas, not just painting but also many different type of art work are as good as the painting now days.

4. Use this summary to answer the next two questions.

5. Research Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's 'Han Dynasty Urn with Coca-Cola logo'(1994)
in order to say what features of the work are Post-Modern.
'Han Dynasty Urn with Coca-Cola logo'(1994), Ai Weiwei

Ai Weiwei' is a artist who does sculpture and photograph works. The 'Han Dynasty Urn with Coca-Cola logo' designed in 1994. The main idea was two ideas combined and presented as a post modernism work. The kettle is very traditionally object, in the olden days people in china are obsess with distinct kettle, and Chinese people treated this kettle as their treasure, and the artist have presented the kettle with the coca cola logo around. Coca cola was invented in the 1886, but the kettle were even earlier, we still see coca cola around these days, because the company keep producing the drinks and develop more through these years, which shows the postmodernism theory. As my own idea I think because of the logo which gives people the impression that this kettle is produce by the company.

6. Research British artist Banksy's street art, and analyze the following two works by the artist
to discuss how each work can be defined at Post-Modern.(Use your list from point 6.)

Banksy does lots of political activist ,film director and painting. As my own opinion I think people called him as a postmodernism artist is because, the place where he paint his artwork is different the others, in the modernism time, people painted on the canvas, but he painted on the street wall, which makes a difference, in the era people don’t paint artwork on wall.
Another point, is that the things that these two person in the painting are holding. The first one is very unique, and second one is a Neanderthal holding MC, this brings the modern world to this painting.

WEEK 1- Nathalie Djurberg's 'Claymations'.

Nathalie Djurberg's 'Claymations'.

Swedish artist Nathalie Djurberg's intricately constructed claymation films are both terrifyingly
disturbing and artlessly sweet.

The new works created for the Venice Biennale explore a surrealistic Garden of Eden in which all that is natural goes awry.

She exposes the innate fear of what is not understood and confronts viewers with the complexity of emotions.

Nathalie Djurberg was awarded the silver lion for a promising young artist at the Venice
Art Biennale 09.

Research Djurberg's work in order to answer the following questions;

What do you understand by the word 'claymation'?
Claymation is a type of art where people present art work by clay into animation, Claymation was noted when plasticine were invented in the 1897. The cartoon been showed today is where the Claymation been presented. The Claymation gives lots of children entertainment and also gives the new idea to show a story. the first day when the cartoon was discovered, it was produce by sketching movement and till 1897 the claymation was made, it became model movement. The clay was made into different character and by using the computer to create the movement for it. The Claymation has made a starting point to the worldwide. It has created a new face to the cartoon industrially.

What is meant by the term 'surrealistic Garden of Eden'? and 'all that is natural goes awry'?
“Surrealistic Garden of Eden” can be separate way to said it, Surrealistic means not real and Garden of Eden is a place where the first man Adam and his wife Eva lived. The work Nathalie Djurberg created, have describe the meaning of “Surrealistic Garden of Eden” which is not real but its revealing the outlook of the Garden of Eden created by God.

'all that is natural goes awry' this meaning have lots of option to viewer because it might mean how human’s movement changes or it could be the natural environment is changing.
The artist Nathalie Djurberg has made gives the feeling that she’s showing changes of human being, most of the models have different eccentric, and sexuality have approached to her art work. I think the behavior of human thinking sexuality is the main thought to these sculptures. She wanted to show how human think in sex.

What are the 'complexity of emotions' that Djurberg confronts us with?

The emotion of her art work is to show in a range of different feeling of people’s thoughts, with this thought she present as a sculpture, the work she have produce is something that everyone does. The emotion that she has in her sculpture are enthusiastic and desire to have opposite sex. A quote said by Shakespeare “God has given you one face and you make yourself another”. I think this quote have fit to this idea of the art work, the god have gave you one face and you made another one to be face with the emotions of different aspect.

How does Djurberg play with the ideas of children's stories, and innocence in some of her work?

In her work she shows the human fantasies. Colourful, harmless children stories. Its also for adults uses, but in a very secure way.

There is a current fascination by some designers with turning the innocent and sweet into something disturbing. Why do you think this has come about?

The work has a fascination idea which has attract people to have extra thoughts around the artefact. In the era, people treated the portrait of naked people were the best type of art work, and treated others artwork not as good as realistic drawing, but in the postmodernism the idea have changed, the sculpture she has created have been brought attention to the world. By using the olden day artwork torque into postmodernism artwork.

In your opinion, why do you think Djurberg's work is so interesting that it was chosen for the Venice Biennale?

One reason that was been chosen is because most of the work she have show is quite disturbing to me, but it’s very interesting that she’s making it disturbing but also very interesting, the changes of the human being is been shaped out by her sculpture.

Add some of your own personal comments on her work.

I think the work she have produce is a way how you feel about other people because in these artwork it presented violence but in a very harmless and colourful ways and this give the positive thinking to the viewer. And it is very interesting how she created this work, which is a very eye catching.
This gives me a lesson that always thinks about the issue how people view your own work.

week 9

Chuck Close:
In his artwork we see a lot of portraits on himself , family and friends in a very large scale. And this style have lead him became a world’s leading modern artist. The painting have prove him self to be a half realistic and half abstract artist. Chuck Close have showed his own idea to produce the new face to the world.
Chuck Close’s painting is mostly painted with oil on caves, and he produce lots of large scale of painting, the work that he produce it Just not only oil on caves, there are also different media that content in his artwork, for example drawing, photography, collage and printmaking. He have the portrait printed and painted into colorful tiles. As what I said before he can be a abstract artist also can be a realistic artist, because when we seen from a distance to the work, we can see clearly the object, which makes it a more like a realistic artist but when see closely we basally see’s different color in one pattern which makes it more abstract. These colorful tiles have made it look like abstract painting.

“Very few people have written about what a work really looks like, especially once there were photographic reproductions of works and so they felt that the photograph would carry the information, and, of course, it does a piss poor job of letting someone know of the scale of the work and of the physicality and how thick the paint was and what the touch was.” Spoken by Chuck Close from http://thinkexist.com/quotation/very-few-people-have-written-about-what-a-work/372247.html

“All the fingerprint paintings are done without a grid.” Spoken by Chuck Close from http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/c/chuckclose196995.html

Claude Monet:
With Claude Monet work we see lot of oil on canvas. A lot of his works are in impression style, which gives a feeling of warm and graceful. Also he was a most influential artist. Lots of his painting he capture the sunlight in different timing. My own option is that when you look at the painting it gives me a feeling of a delusion, because a lot of his works are very relax-able.

The techniques that Claude Monet have used in his painting is called the “broken color”. The broken color gives the feeling of mystery. Claude Monet not just working with oil painting he also worked with pastels and some sketches. In his color use, he used a range of color like the earth color.
By seeing his painting, I also think he not just do realistic painting, because if we look at his techniques we see he does abstract painting steps, a lot of his work are play with the painting knife. We see closely the color is used in overlapping each color.

“Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.” spoken by Claude Monet from http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/c/claudemone176117.html

"These landscapes of water and reflection have become an obsession." Spoken by Claude Monet from http://painting.about.com/library/biographies/blartistquotesmonet.htm

3 similarities
Two artist’s work gives me a feeling of when seeing from a distance is realistic but abstract in close
Two artists have put a variety of colors into the painting.
Both of the artists have used many different media.
 3 differences
Monet is more into landscape and Close is more in portrait.
Two artists have used different patterns.
Monet was born in the past therefore there are more olden style of painting but Close has more modern painting.

Describe your response to the work of both artists.
As my own option, I think both artists have taught us some techniques and some aspect on styling the art work. The art work Chuck Close produce is more modern and technological, which have influenced me the abstract and realistic. With Claude Monet’s work, it presents the olden style of painting, and I was influence from him that he uses the earth artistic, to developed the painting. I was please on how both artists uses their own style to produce such a good artwork, that have brought attention to the world.

Week 7-Industrialisation and Cao Fei's RMB City

The artists of the late 1800's and early 1900's, in Europe, were influenced by the Industrial revolution.

1. What and when was the Industrial Revolution?
Industrial revolution started during the 1800s, it was the time that most of the steam powered machines was created, which led more factories been produce, the painting above have shown the relation between the Industrial revolution system, it was mostly influenced by the invitation of the new technology. In this period a lot of things have changed like the agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation technology on socioeconomic and culture. These are all goods that been produce by human, this also changes the life for human, because its more accessible and useful. The industrial revolution started at the olden Britain and got spread throughout the other country, such as Germany, The United States and France. The Europe and north America are more expand on the industrial revolution.

2. Research both Modernist paintings in order to comment on the subject matter, form and style used to celebrate the machine and motion in each painting. Answer the question in 2 parts for each painting.

The way how the artist have painted this artwork have already describe the paintings story, the why how he painted showed the complication on how Industrial revolution have relationship with human, as my own option, I think the artist is trying to tell use that the relation between use and Industrial revolution in the olden days where more accessible and useful equipment are produced. The movement of the horse shows how fast the Industrial revolution have produce goods to the world and changes the societies, and the human represent the user of this new goods.
This painting shows the movement of dogs and a movement of unknown feature with the color black.
With my own option, it think its more likely to be a race between the animal and the machine, because the dog have a fast speed of movement there for the artist have use dog to have the same speed as the machines. As a easy to say is that the Industrial revolution are also fast as a dog.

Cao Fei's RMB City (2007-9) refers to China's recent rapid industialisation and urbanization.

3. Research Cao Fei's RMB City (2007-9)  in order to comment on this work in more depth.
i.e what images has she used in her digital collage that refer to China's present and history, and why has she used these.
As usual most of the people noted that china has many factories around it. And I think the work she have produce is a example of how china look like with lots of factories, and shows that china is also a country that still have the Industrial revolution around these day. In the image she has put new invention, new technology inside that land and because it shows the new invention and the old manufactures technology got put in together, which make it more reasonable on explaining why Industrial revolution still happening around this country.

4. RMB City is described as a utopia/dystopia. Comment on what these terms mean, and how they can be applied to the work.
RMB city is city where mostly can not be exist, is more like a visual city. Utopia is a good word to explain the artwork, because it shows the way how is not existence to our world, and it can not be produce by human.

5. Although the Modernist paintings and the contemporary digital work have emerged from
different contexts, there are also many similarities. Comment on the similarities that you can see in the work?
The similarities between the two different painting, as my own option, the theme of the two types of painting is all on the theme of Industrial revolution. Because it both show the relation of the effect on Industrial revolution, and how it affect on human.
