Pipilotti Rist's video art- how can we link this to science and reason?
Still from 'Ever is Over All' (1997)
1. Define the 17th century 'Scientific Revolution', and say how it changed European thought and world view.
In the 17th centuries the scientific revolution bought the fundamental change in the way how Europeans think about the natural world, it was a period of time where is a big change in scientific thought and scientific revolution is also implicated in political and religious, the reason behind are because the period of the exploration have led them to discover new plants and animals, also got encouraged to be interested in natural science and in navigation on astronomy, as an conclusion the changes is in two different major area, one is biology and astronomy, all of these happening is because in the period they wanted the technology to be more developed and moving on from the medieval world to the early modern world. Therefore they’ll have a faster development on the new technology in the world.
2. Give examples of how we can we still see evidence of the 'Scientific Revolution' in the world today.
The scientific revolution had bought us the advancement of the science method, like math, physics and biology, now is influenced to a lot of astute thinkers began to having lots of question and this questioning had led to the scientific revolution. one of the American statement said “can chart our future clearly and wisely only when we know the path which has led to the present” this sentence have describe a person’s feeling of the impact of the scientific revolution. Today there are a lot of scientists are experimenting with nanotechnology and venture on the new scientific disciplines. Because of the scientific revolution have created more new technology for people to use on, like this artist have used technology to created her own work. Therefore we can still see the evidence of the scientific revolution are still happening today.
Research Pipilotti Rist's video installations to answer the following;
3. From your research, do you think that the contemporary art world values art work
that uses new media/technology over traditional media?
I think that new technology can be another way to be used as an equipment for making art, it’s more modern. Either of these two types of media is useable, because both of the media can create lots of different art work. Technology media are more moveable ,like film, picture, with the traditional media are more immobile, but it have the precious because it’s the only one, with the new technology media, there will be more copies of it.
4. How has Pipilotti Rist used new media/technology to enhance the audience's experience of her work.
Many olden art work, have worked with paints and handwork equipments, which we see a lot in many museum, but with Pipilotti Rist’s art work we see lot of new technology media with her works, this have created the new way that we can developed more with our owns, and Pipilotti Rist’s art work also have a feeling of lost in some where, for example the film above, we see the main picture but very chaotic.
5. Comment on how the installation, sound and scale of 'Ever is Over All' (1997) could impact on the audience's experience of the work.
This installation have created a feeling of a human in two different faces, in the art work “ever is over all” filmed in 1997, it show a girl smashing the windows if the car and the other side was the plants and trees. This give a feeling of two different faces, of how the girl react but the inside is lovely as a flowers and plants. This film can impact on a lot of audience of two different idea in one art work.
6. Comment on the notion of 'reason' within the content of the video. Is the woman's behaviour reasonable or unreasonable?
I don’t think there is a behaviour of reasonable and unreasonable, because the artist is give use a two different feeling.
7. Comment on your 'reading' (understanding) of the work by discussion the aesthetic (look), experience and the ideologies (ideas, theories) of the work.
To read Pipilotti Rist's work, i think people need to think more creative because a lot of her work we need to think what happening, as what I said before a lot of her work is very chaotic, to look at her art work I have looked at the colors and the shapes, because she also use some odd colors and shapes. Also her works have a starting point where she goes from a small things into the big thing.

ReplyDeleteI think that the scientific revolution has changed the europeans thoughts and worldview, as it has made them change in the way they think and also give them experience in exploration to discover new plants and animals, also get them into natural science and navigation on astronomy. I agree with you when you say that the artist in the video's behavior can be viewed as both reasonable and unreasonable, as artists do give off a feeling of both the good and bad sides. Since they are artist's they should be able to give off those kind of vibes so us viewers can understand different perspectives.
ReplyDeleteWhen talking about the scientific revolution its interesting to see the development of thought and ideas that can be reflected in art in our world today. Thoughts and ideas that contain knowledge such as an advancement of the science method, like maths, physics and biology. Though technology is changing constantly, we are still able to refer our ideas back to the rennaisance. This showing the movement away from the classic paint to digital art/moving image. I agree that some artist nowdays are using technology within their works such as Pipilotti Rist thus showing that the scientific revolution is still around today.
ReplyDeleteThe science revolution was a shift away from religion and superstition and began to focus more on knowledge, facts, science and mathematical thinking.
It was during the 17th century when modernity occurred and people started to consider things such as natural science and astronomy as you said. This was also related to humanism when people were moving away from the church and becoming more intrigued in science. It lead to the world becoming more open minded.
ReplyDeleteI agree that technology and media has many copies as oppose to traditional pieces of art which are one of a kind. The owner of the traditional masterpiece has the joy of knowing that his artefact is one of a kind. Contemporary works on the other hand are duplicable and has various owners.
hey, to my opinion Scientific Revolution was a period which include Renaissance and Enlightenment, in that time new ideas in physics, biology, chemistry nearly involved all acience areas. And i think that new media/ technology absolutely cant just say they can over traditional ones, because teraditional media like the fundamental, all new staff cant stand out by itself, the relationship between them are supporting and be supported. Also we can see the comic tension in Ever is over All.
ReplyDeleteWe still believe that scientific development is the basis for prosperity of the country. Scientific revolution created scientific thought and reasoning. Today it
ReplyDeletehelps us understand and observe the world and the way it works. The way we think of the world makes the future much better.
I agree with the artist being both reasonable and unreasonable as both sides are portrayed quite well. But then again it wouldn't be a very good peice of artwork if it was only portrayed in one single view. An artwork needs to have more than one view point such as the artwork "ever is over all" some can view it as a woman breaking free from a struggle with a problem and some can view it as a dream and some can view it in other ways too. Sometimes when an artwork is seen as a great artwork it becomes great from the many different veiwpoints that it creates. These create discussion between observers and inspires intellectual conversation.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting how you have discussed how technology has influenced media for art. I agree that it has provided more variety in terms of the introduction of video, as opposed to still images, and the ability to create exact replications of a work, as opposed to every single copy being unique. It has also in a way made creating certain styles of art much more time efficient, for example, there is no need to wait for layers of paint to dry, and you can create a digital image on a computer much quicker than it would take to create a complex painting.
