week 9

Chuck Close:
In his artwork we see a lot of portraits on himself , family and friends in a very large scale. And this style have lead him became a world’s leading modern artist. The painting have prove him self to be a half realistic and half abstract artist. Chuck Close have showed his own idea to produce the new face to the world.
Chuck Close’s painting is mostly painted with oil on caves, and he produce lots of large scale of painting, the work that he produce it Just not only oil on caves, there are also different media that content in his artwork, for example drawing, photography, collage and printmaking. He have the portrait printed and painted into colorful tiles. As what I said before he can be a abstract artist also can be a realistic artist, because when we seen from a distance to the work, we can see clearly the object, which makes it a more like a realistic artist but when see closely we basally see’s different color in one pattern which makes it more abstract. These colorful tiles have made it look like abstract painting.

“Very few people have written about what a work really looks like, especially once there were photographic reproductions of works and so they felt that the photograph would carry the information, and, of course, it does a piss poor job of letting someone know of the scale of the work and of the physicality and how thick the paint was and what the touch was.” Spoken by Chuck Close from http://thinkexist.com/quotation/very-few-people-have-written-about-what-a-work/372247.html

“All the fingerprint paintings are done without a grid.” Spoken by Chuck Close from http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/c/chuckclose196995.html

Claude Monet:
With Claude Monet work we see lot of oil on canvas. A lot of his works are in impression style, which gives a feeling of warm and graceful. Also he was a most influential artist. Lots of his painting he capture the sunlight in different timing. My own option is that when you look at the painting it gives me a feeling of a delusion, because a lot of his works are very relax-able.

The techniques that Claude Monet have used in his painting is called the “broken color”. The broken color gives the feeling of mystery. Claude Monet not just working with oil painting he also worked with pastels and some sketches. In his color use, he used a range of color like the earth color.
By seeing his painting, I also think he not just do realistic painting, because if we look at his techniques we see he does abstract painting steps, a lot of his work are play with the painting knife. We see closely the color is used in overlapping each color.

“Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.” spoken by Claude Monet from http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/c/claudemone176117.html

"These landscapes of water and reflection have become an obsession." Spoken by Claude Monet from http://painting.about.com/library/biographies/blartistquotesmonet.htm

3 similarities
Two artist’s work gives me a feeling of when seeing from a distance is realistic but abstract in close
Two artists have put a variety of colors into the painting.
Both of the artists have used many different media.
 3 differences
Monet is more into landscape and Close is more in portrait.
Two artists have used different patterns.
Monet was born in the past therefore there are more olden style of painting but Close has more modern painting.

Describe your response to the work of both artists.
As my own option, I think both artists have taught us some techniques and some aspect on styling the art work. The art work Chuck Close produce is more modern and technological, which have influenced me the abstract and realistic. With Claude Monet’s work, it presents the olden style of painting, and I was influence from him that he uses the earth artistic, to developed the painting. I was please on how both artists uses their own style to produce such a good artwork, that have brought attention to the world.

  1. I really prefer Claude Monet’s painting style it looks warm and smooth but his drawing skill really amazing as I saw. He did well descript each subject even if that is human or natural things. Also, I agree with your statement which you wrote “Monet used a range of colour like the earth colour”. However, he didn’t usually used black or dark colour just almost brown.
On the other hand, Chuck Close’s painting was more focus on the realistic without his own thinking. I think that is really hard without own mind but as we can see his working it looks really real person’s portrait .

  2. I like your comparison with Monet and Close, of the different techniques they utilized and their unique styles which were influenced by the different era each lived in. I find that it's quite interesting to imagine what would have happened if Monet was still alive now. Would his style have evolved with the digital era? Or would he have stuck to his traditional and warm tone of art?

  3. I found the quote you find really describes the style of the aritist - “Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.” Because all his art works are very colours and over lapping. After looking at his works are really colourful, fulfilling and realistic. So I think that quote suits the artist very well.

  4. I agree with you when you said: "Monet is more into landscape and Close is more in portrait." also when you said: "Two artists have used different patterns." both have shown great skill in their choice of style and are similar in some ways but still very different in many other ways such as mentioned above.
